The Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (CEIT) is a joint collaboration project of Government of India and Government of Cook Islands. This initiative was signed and endorsed by the Honorable Deputy Prime Minister Mark Brown in May 2017 in a Memorandum of Understanding between both Governments. The University of the South Pacific Cook Island Campus was nominated as the Implementing Agency on behalf of the Cook Islands.
The overall aim of the CEIT is to offer specialized training program in the field of ICT to the citizens of Cook Islands. CEIT has an international reach and will impart ICT education in Cook Islands and to other students of friendly Pacific Island Countries. Centre for Development in Advanced Computing (C-DAC), India and The University of the South Pacific Cook Islands Campus (USP), Cook Islands are the specialist cooperating with CEIT. The equipment of CEIT has been provided by Government of India. The Head and Faculty members of CEIT are experienced IT specialists from C-DAC and USP.
The Cook Islands Government allocated funding towards the establishment and operations of the CEIT in the 2018-2019 National Budget. The Government of India have also made significant contributions through the provision of all necessary hardware, teaching and learning resources, and two full time faulty staff to live and teach on Rarotonga for two years.
The Center for Development of Advance Computing (C-DAC) visited the USP Campus in August 2018 to ensure facilities were prepared and the necessary IT infrastructure installed. The new computer lab was installed in April 2019, and classrooms were equipped with the projector, smart white board, and video conference facility for students.
CEIT Infrastructure
The CEIT have state of the art IT Infrastructure that will have high standards for assuring the integrity and functionality of its hosted computing environment. This is accomplished through redundancy of both fiber optic cables and power; which shall include emergency backup power generation.
The state-of-the-art Server Room is hosting all the applications, which will be, utilized for the advanced IT training in the CEIT. CEIT have both wired data network to ensure seamless connectivity of the intranet and internet.
CEIT have fully functional training labs with modern facilities viz. interactive white board and projection system to enhance the learning environment. CEIT have a provision to connect to India through video conferencing for special sessions and on-line teaching in future.
Students will have access to CEIT Library and course materials available on site.
